Pool Safety Tips
A swimming pool is an investment that provides relief from the Henderson summer heat, and adds value to your home.
While pools are fun for children and pets, pool safety is a large responsibility.
The following list of tips can help you enforce pool safety.
Use Gates and Covers
Installing gates, along with a fence at least four feet high, is one of the best ways to protect pets and kids from wandering into the pool area unsupervised. The pool fence should be equipped with locks and an alarm. When the pool is not being used, it should be covered, along with the hot tub, if present.
Use Ramps and Access Ladders
A pool ramp is a water escape device that can save the life of anyone who is in the water, especially dogs who enjoy swimming. Contrary to popular belief, dogs are not always natural swimmers and are as susceptible to drowning as humans. A ramp is lightweight, flexible and easy to install.
Access ladders are easier for people, and offer a quick way to exit the deep end of the pool. In addition, water markers should be used to guide swimmers and help them stay in depths where they are comfortable.
Teach Children How to Swim
One of the more important lessons parents can teach their children is how to swim. It is a lifesaving skill. Swimming is easily taught at home or by an instructor at your local, Henderson recreational center, gym or a health club. Children can be introduced to water as infants and feel comfortable as seasoned swimmers in a short time. That said, just because a child knows how to swim does not mean he or she should ever be left unattended even in shallow water.
Learn How to Give CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is another lifesaving technique that every adult and child should know how to perform for pool safety. It preserves brain function During a drowning, the individual stops breathing and the heart stops pumping. Administering CPR restores air flow, preserving brain function. Use of CPR can be mean the difference between life or death, and anyone who uses a pool should be skilled in it. You can find a CPR training class near Henderson through the American Heart Association or Red Cross.
Always Supervise Children
Children who use a pool should always have an adult present, and should never be allowed to swim where there is no adult or lifeguard on duty. An older child should never be allowed to act as a supervisor, even with lifeguard skills.
Teach Basic Water Safety
Adults need to education kids on basic water safety; including not swimming after dark or during a thunderstorm. Kids should also be discouraged from diving or jumping off a diving board if they have not had advanced swimming lessons. Never allow anyone to jump into a swimming pool from windows or rooftops, as this can cause severe injury or death.
