How Do I Clean The Pool Filter?

The most important responsibility of being a pool owner is ensuring the safety of each swimmer that uses it. While most people think of having life preservers or taking CPR courses, another component of pool safety is how hygenic the water is. Part of keeping the pool safe and clean for swimming involves an in-depth knowledge of the pool's filtration system, which keeps debris and particulates from your shiny blue water.

Your pool filter is one of the main components of your pool system and requires constant upkeep. The best case scenario of not cleaning your pool filter is an increased presence of algae and improper filtration, but the worst case scenario is a restricted water flow that damages the pool motor and costs you money and headaches down the line.

Cartridge Filter

  1. Drain the filter tank by removing the drain plug.
  2. Remove the band around the tank (a socket wrench works well).
  3. Remove the top and clean the cartridges thoroughly with a hose.
  4. Wipe off the tank O-ring and lubricate, then re-assemble the tank and tighten the band.
  5. Screw in the drain plug and re-prime the pump.

D.E. Filter

  1. Once the tank top is off, remove the entire grid unit.
  2. Unscrew the top so you can hose off each grid individually.
  3. Re-assemble the grids in the original order (sometimes turning them upside down is easier to fit into the notches of the manifold).

Then finish as you would for the cartridge filter.
